1956 – Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Alleggerita Chassis No. 1493E 03358 Vehicle sold without an MOT ‘One of only 200 produced, impeccable history, former Rallye du Var entrant!’ In the aftermath of the Second World War, Alfa Romeo struggled to make a genuine return to motor racing. Despite the lack of a proper motorsport programme in the mid-1950s, the Milan-based firm introduced a lighter version of the Giulietta Sprint in April 1954… a sort of 1950s ‘Customer Competition’ model! Thanks to this, Alfa Romeo was represented at numerous circuits and races, such as the Tour de France Automobile, the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio, to name but a few!   The modified Giulietta was christened the Giulietta Sprint Veloce Alleggerita, and only a handful of examples were produced (200 according to the most reliable sources, of which 40 still survive!). The modifications included: aluminium doors and bumpers, the replacement of the wind-up windows with sliding ones, a magnesium oil sump and intake manifold, and the removal of the rear seats and sound-deadening materials…    According to its certificate of origin, our example was delivered on 26 November 1956 in this elegant ‘Azzurro Nube’ colour in Paris, despite its first registration appearing to be Monegasque (4721, pre-1958). In February 1958, it was registered in the name of the company Icare 254 GR 75, before passing into the hands of Royal Garage (Paris, 9th arrondissement), and then moving to the Var. It was then registered as 788 EW 83, first with Mr Antiocha in February 1960, then with Fieschi in January 1962 and Pensier in July 1962, who drove it in the 9th Rallye du Var!    In January 1968, our Alfa was taken to Mr Plantier’s garage in Isère, where it remained until 2007. It was then that it changed hands, and the first phase of restoration began. In 2012, it was purchased by a connoisseur of fine Italian cars, who completed the restoration of this car. In total, it took nearly 10 years to restore it to its original condition. The crowning glory: an appearance at the 2020 Mille Miglia! In 2021, it changed hands once more, joining the collection of another major collector, himself a connoisseur of exceptional Italian cars! Today, the car is in fine overall condition and has just undergone extensive work to seal the engine.
