1977 – Maserati Merak SS Chassis no. AM122US*2220 French classic car registration document Vehicle sold without a roadworthiness test ‘A unique Merak, in the SS version, restored at no expense spared… ” The Merak was showcased as the star attraction at the 1972 Paris Motor Show. It retained the general lines of the Bora but was fitted with a V6 engine identical to that in the SM, now bored out to 3 litres, increasing power from 170 to 190 ch. In this technical configuration, the Merak exceeded 240 km/h.   The layout remained the same: four overhead camshafts driven by chains, fuelled by three twin-barrel carburettors, a monocoque chassis, independent suspension on all four wheels and disc brakes on all four wheels. The space saved due to the V6’s smaller footprint compared to the V8 allowed for the installation of two small rear seats and improved sound insulation.   The car in this sale joined the current collection – one of the finest in Europe – in 2012. It already stood out from other Meraks thanks to its unique bodywork, having at some unknown point been given a smoother treatment of the waistline, bringing its lines closer to those of the Bora and making it even more exclusive. The custom-made chrome bumpers look superb, as does the tinted, gradient-tinted windscreen. The bolt-on alloy wheels were custom-made by the talented racing driver Claude Svelig and fitted with Michelin XWX tyres. The black leather upholstery was reupholstered at the excellent Antoine workshop. It is not fitted with the Citroën hydraulic system, which is a source of complications.   Since 2012, this Merak SS has undergone a complete mechanical restoration costing over €70,000, carried out by the renowned specialist Isotta in Colombes (invoice attached to the file), as well as various bodywork repairs at Red Parts. In total, over €90,000 has been invested to make this Merak SS one of the finest we have ever had the pleasure of seeing…   With only 652 examples produced, it is a genuine alternative to the Ferrari 308 and Porsche 911 of the era, thanks to its sleek lines, comfort and performance, particularly in this SS version, which is the most sought-after by collectors.
