Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1984, the Ferrari Testarossa succeeded the 512 BB and quickly established itself as one of the most iconic GTs of its era. Its name, meaning ‘red head’ in Italian, refers to the red-painted cylinder heads of Ferrari racing engines, notably those of the famous Testa Rossa models that triumphed in competition.
Designed by Pininfarina, its spectacular silhouette is characterised by its low, wide lines, retractable headlights and imposing, ribbed side air intakes, which have become its signature feature. Beyond their bold aesthetics, these air intakes feed the engine’s side radiators. At nearly two metres wide, the Testarossa commands a remarkable presence and perfectly embodies the automotive exuberance of the 1980s.
Under its rear bonnet lies a 4.9-litre flat-twelve engine, mounted in a mid-rear position. Featuring four valves per cylinder, four overhead camshafts and fuel injection, it develops 390 ch at 6,300 rpm and 490 Nm of torque. Paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, this engine enables the Italian sports car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in around 5.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 290 km/h. Its captivating sound and smooth power delivery contribute fully to the driving pleasure.
Designed first and foremost as a prestigious grand tourer, the Testarossa combines high-level performance, stability at high speeds and a two-seater cabin that blends comfort with sportiness, notably featuring the famous metal gear-selector grille.
With 7,177 units produced between 1984 and 1991, this Berlinetta Boxer enjoyed considerable commercial success for a car in this category. Now highly prized by collectors, the Testarossa occupies a prominent place amongst Ferrari’s iconic models. A true symbol of a decade marked by bold styling and power, it remains a Maranello legend and one of the most recognisable Ferraris in history.
The Ferrari Testarossa we are offering was originally delivered new by the Auto Palace garage in Cannes, via Établissements Charles Pozzi – the official importer for France – to its first owner, a resident of Aix-en-Provence, in October 1988.
Registered on 6 October 1988, this is a 1989 model year example, that is to say, a version known as the ‘5-nut’ model, in reference to its ‘5-bolt’ star-spoke wheels, thus moving away from the centre-lock system and TRX tyres of previous versions.
It is finished in the Rosso Corsa colour, characteristic of both the make and the model. However, its interior is nonetheless quite distinctive, as it features two-tone black and red upholstery, combined with red carpet to match the bodywork, creating a look that is both understated and sporty, and extremely striking.
During the first fifteen years following its manufacture, it was regularly serviced by Juan Auto, a well-known specialist on the Côte d’Azur at the time, as evidenced by the original service history book that still accompanies it.
It then moved to the Bordeaux region, where it was purchased by the current owner from a reputable dealer in 2009. In the just over 17 years he has owned the car, he has driven it relatively little, whilst keeping it in good condition. As a result, this Testarossa, which has clearly always been well looked after, is now in an enviable state of preservation, having clocked up barely 79,200 km. This represents a relatively ideal mileage for a classic car that is nearly 40 years old.
Furthermore, earlier this year it underwent a major service costing over €10,000 at Palau, the brand’s Bordeaux dealership. In addition to the standard service, the ignition system was overhauled, with the spark plugs and wiring harnesses replaced; the brakes were refurbished; and the tyres and battery were replaced.
Finally, it comes with its toolbox and a large Schedoni natural leather bag.
This is therefore an excellent example of a Testarossa – a model that is becoming increasingly difficult to find and whose value continues to rise. So, act now before it’s too late!
