COMMENTS:
RENAULT production record dated 20/12/1957, source: Club des Amateurs d’Anciennes Renault: “For this R1104 chassis, the frame marking reads ‘Chapron’ and the letters DD above it probably stand for ‘Right-hand drive’”. The only example commissioned in this way.
Photo album dating from around 1994 documenting the complete restoration over a period of four years.
HISTORY:
First owner: Charles Herbineau, sales representative for Hurtu bicycles and later PUCH motorbikes. Charles Herbineau had always driven right-hand drive vehicles; he bought Henri Chapron’s ‘Coach Grand Luxe’ for 1,800,000 francs to replace his Salmson (probably at the Humblot garage on Rue du Faubourg St Jacques, Paris XIV). When it was first registered on 10 May 1958, the coupé was given the registration number 4575 HA 75. When Mr Herbineau moved to St Mandé in 1968, the Coach was re-registered as 5001 G 94. Mr Herbineau kept the Chapron until his death (1980), after which it remained stored in a dry garage in St Mandé until 1992. Taken over by professionals, it changed hands several times in the Dijon area before joining Christian Battaglia’s collection in January 1994. The car was then grey with a blue roof and blue interior. There was corrosion on the sills and floor panels. Mr Battaglia embarked on a complete restoration, involving a full dismantling (windows, mechanical parts, doors, etc.). The sills and floor panels were stripped back to bare metal and rebuilt where necessary. The accounts for the restoration provide a detailed breakdown of the costs incurred. In total, over 120,000 francs were invested in the restoration, not including the more than 1,000 hours of work that Christian Battaglia carried out personally on the vehicle. The chrome trim and wheels were refurbished, in addition to a complete overhaul of the engine and mechanical components. The greatest challenge lay in the plexiglass rear window, which was remade as a single piece by a specialist using the original mould. The colour scheme has evolved into an elegant combination: a red body, an ivory roof and a cream interior with leather upholstery crafted by Pierre Edmond, Henri Chapron’s former upholsterer. This is the condition in which it stands today, having clocked up over 37,000 km with Christian Battaglia at the wheel!
