Launched in 1961, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE quickly established itself as the flagship model and the brand’s technological showcase in the early 1960s. Whilst it retained the bodywork of the W111 and its famous, distinctive rear wings – known as the ‘Heckflosse’ – it stood out for its cutting-edge engineering. Its 3.0-litre M189 inline six-cylinder engine, made entirely of aluminium and derived from the legendary 300 SL, combines mechanical fuel injection with an output of 170 ch. A true showcase of innovation, the 300 SE came as standard with adjustable air suspension, offering remarkable ride comfort, four disc brakes, power steering and a four-speed automatic gearbox.
This Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Coupé was delivered new in France in 1963 via the importer Royal Élysée, as evidenced by its manufacturer’s plate and original service booklets.
Having had only three successive owners, all based in the Lyon area, it has retained its original registration number, 6995 BT 69. The current owner acquired it in 2002; at which time the car belonged to Mr Hugonnier, who had owned it since 1975.
Retaining its original upholstery, carpets, ceiling light and Becker Mexico car radio, this 300 SE has recently undergone several restoration works. In 2026, the bodywork was repainted on the left-hand side and on the front and rear right wings by Carrosserie Bakanyi at a cost of €1,500. A mechanical service, costing €5,000, was also carried out by Carage garage. This included, in particular, the replacement of the compressor and alternator belts, as well as the coupling between the alternator and the water pump.
This 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Coupé is thus distinguished by a particularly clear ownership history: only three owners since it was first registered, a registration number retained since delivery, and a history closely linked to the Lyon region. This example has retained a large proportion of its original components whilst receiving the care necessary to preserve it.
