Description
1930 – Magnat Debon NMT 500cc Frame no. NMT 57390 Engine no. MC485 Original French registration document No MOT Founded in Grenoble, Magnat-Debon was one of the leading names in French motorcycling. Having started out manufacturing bicycles, the brand moved into motorcycling at the start of the 20th century and quickly gained a reputation for quality, robustness and elegance. Following its merger with Terrot in the 1920s, Magnat-Debon retained a distinct range and continued to produce machines designed specifically for touring. Featured in the catalogue in the 1930s, the Type NMT Tourisme or Grand Tourisme was the 500 cm³ version designed for long rides. Its 499 cm³ (81 × 97 mm) single-cylinder, 4-stroke side-valve engine produced around 5 CV. It was fitted with a 3-speed gearbox, a chain final drive and a parallelogram fork with adjustable shock absorbers. Designed primarily for touring and reliability, the NMT was exceptionally well-equipped for its time: a saddle-mounted fuel tank, a luggage rack with panniers, a soft saddle, footrests, and front and rear brakes. With its silhouette typical of French motorbikes from the early 1930s, this 500 NMT Tourisme is today a fine example of Magnat-Debon’s craftsmanship on the eve of major changes in the motorbike industry. This example features original period fittings, such as the toolbox on the fuel tank and the tool bag on the luggage rack. It comes with its original registration documents, registered in Rouen on 26 February 1930. The gear indicators on the frame, the rubber knee pads, the long-range headlight and the speedometers fitted to the handlebars and on the fuel tank are all welcome details on this magnificent pre-war example. Significant expenditure has been made on its mechanical components. Boasting a beautiful patina, this Magnat-Debon with a Blackburne engine is awaiting its new owner.
