The 1980 YZ125 is of particular historical interest as it marks the transition between the very basic early YZ models and the much more advanced generations that would appear in the early 1980s. Yamaha would soon make features such as liquid cooling and more sophisticated rear suspension systems standard across its range.
The 5-speed gearbox allows the engine’s relatively narrow rev range to be utilised to the full, whilst the oil-bath multi-plate clutch is designed to withstand the repeated stresses of motocross.
The chassis is also designed for competition: long suspension travel, a 21-inch front wheel for clearing obstacles, and knobby tyres for loose terrain.
The 1980 model was the last to feature air cooling, before the introduction of water cooling. This example, free from any cosmetic or mechanical faults, is highly prized by enthusiasts and collectors of the brand.
A bike in perfect working order, eligible for several vintage motocross events.
