Description
1985 – Renault Supercinq GT Turbo Chassis no. VF1C4050500507962 Engine no. C1JC7/82-C009663 - Renault’s GTI of the 1980s, the successor to the Gordini, R5 Alpine and Turbo - Sought-after early-production ‘Phase One’ model with electric front windows - Panda White exterior, black/grey fabric upholstery with red stripes down the centre and red carpet - French car, owned by the same family from 1986 to 2022, virtually second-hand - Recently refurbished mechanically and cosmetically at a cost of nearly €12,000 (invoices available) - Only 85,000 km on the clock, with a virtually pristine MOT history and a spare key The file and additional photos for each vehicle are available via the following Drive link (upon request for access): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lGJ4wjEQFbPZQt2r2CTdicpUI9SYtqUK?usp=share_link Unveiled in 1985, the Renault 5 GT Turbo follows in the footsteps of the small sports cars that made Renault’s reputation. As the successor to the Renault 5 Alpine Turbo, it was designed to take on the highly popular Peugeot 205 GTI, but with a different philosophy: prioritising turbocharging over a large engine capacity in order to deliver top-class performance in a compact package. Aesthetically, Marcello Gandini succeeded in modernising the R5’s lines whilst retaining its essential character. Its styling leaves no doubt as to its ambitions: wide bumpers incorporating air intakes, flared wings, bespoke alloy wheels, side skirts, ‘GT Turbo’ badging and a full range of instruments give this Supercinq a resolutely sporty identity, without being over the top. Under the bonnet sits the robust ‘Cléon-Fonte’ engine, a 1,397 cm³ four-cylinder unit, powered by a single-barrel Solex carburettor and a Garrett T2 turbocharger. In its initial version, it produced 115 ch, before increasing to 120 ch with the arrival of Phase 2 in 1987. Combined with a modest kerb weight of around 830 kg, this setup enabled the GT Turbo to deliver remarkable acceleration and a top speed exceeding 200 km/h – figures that placed it amongst the best in its class at the time. The press was certainly not short of praise, as Renault’s little powerhouse surprised everyone with its turbo’s punch and muscular looks. Beyond its performance, the GT Turbo charms with its character. Its old-school turbo, with its characteristic response time followed by a sharp surge of power, delivers a driving experience that has become a rarity. Its sharp front-end, precise steering and playful chassis make it a demanding car, yet one that is particularly rewarding for experienced drivers. Having enjoyed success in competition, particularly in rallying and Group N, the GT Turbo played a major part in forging its legend. A true icon of the 1980s, it remains one of the most iconic French ‘youngtimers’ today. Exemplars preserved in their original condition are now highly sought after by collectors, who appreciate as much its mechanical authenticity as its explosive character and its significance in the history of French sports cars. The Renault 5 GT Turbo on offer is a Phase One model from 1986, first registered in December 1985. It is a stunning example, finished in Blanc Panda with bumpers, wheel arch extensions and side skirts in shades of white, combined with a red carpeted interior and black and grey upholstery with red stripes down the centre, echoing the floor covering. It also features the equipment pack, including electric front windows and remote central locking. It is also notable for having had only four owners, two of whom were from the same family – first a couple, then their son – between April 1986 and 2022! As such, it is effectively a second-hand car. Moreover, this car has always been registered in the Loire department, where it was originally ordered new from the Renault dealership in Le Coteau near Roanne and where it has spent its entire life to date. In addition to this impeccable history, due to the car being off the road for around fifteen years from 2007/2008, it has clocked up just 85,000 km. However, as a precaution, a mechanical overhaul was carried out by a professional in 2024 following its acquisition by the current owner in July 2022. On this occasion, the clutch, starter motor, alternator, ignition harness and exhaust (a Devil replica) were replaced, whilst the cooling system, brakes and running gear were also overhauled. Details of the work carried out, costing just over €6,200, are available on the corresponding invoice. At the same time, in addition to this general overhaul, the paintwork was also redone, including some bodywork, at a cost of just over €5,700; and the interior has also been restored through the refurbishment of the upholstery and the replacement of the carpet, ensuring that this R5 GT Turbo is presented in pristine condition. Despite the well-known fragility of this model’s finish, this is therefore a particularly attractive example of this little speedster. All the more so as our test drive allowed us to put its full playful and dynamic potential to the test! Moreover, the latest MOT, valid until February 2026, is completely clear, apart from the adjustment of the front fog lights. We are therefore auctioning a rare, partially restored Renault Supercinq GT Turbo, meticulously restored to its original specification, with a rather exceptional history and relatively low mileage. An opportunity not to be missed under any circumstances for enthusiasts of this type of car!
