The Giulia was to follow in its footsteps, with its production run—spanning numerous versions—lasting over 15 years. The beauty of its lines is down to the pencil strokes of a talented designer, barely 21 years old, who had just joined Bertone: Giorgetto Giugiaro. This was one of his very first creations. The coupé was very bold for its time, as its ‘Bialbero’ engine was at the cutting edge of technology. The engine block was made entirely of aluminium and featured two overhead camshafts. Initially offered with a 1600 engine on the Giulia Sprint GT, a smaller ‘Junior’ version of the Giulia Bertone coupé, powered by a 1300 engine, appeared in 1966. The 1600 version was then renamed the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce. Several further developments followed, each more powerful and better finished than the last. In 1968, the new GT Veloce (replacing the 1600) was unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show. The ‘Giulia’ name disappeared, but the spirit of the car remained. The range was then based on two engine variants: the 1300 Junior and the 1750 GT Veloce. For the latter, the front end was completely redesigned with a grille featuring four headlamps and the removal of the ‘letterbox’ air intake. It was powered by an engine developing 118 chevaux. Whilst performance saw little improvement compared to the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, the 1750 retained its fiery character whilst being much more supple and therefore a pleasure to drive. It is recognisable by the Quadrifoglio emblems adorning the lower sections of the rear wings, a feature reserved for Alfa Romeo’s top-of-the-range models of the era. The interior finishes are also more refined, with a new dashboard featuring two large chrome-rimmed dials and wood veneers that blend beautifully with the tulip-shaped steering wheel and gear-knob, which are also made of wood. A second series appeared in 1969, featuring a number of improvements (suspended pedals, dual-circuit braking system) and aesthetic changes (refined bumpers with vertical stops, indicators integrated into the front skirt and a simplified seat design), before being replaced in 1971 by a new version fitted with a 2-litre engine, the 2000 GT Veloce. Also known as the Giulia 2000 GTV, this model retained the essential features of the 1750 GT Series 2 whilst adding a few styling details, including a grille adorned with eight horizontal bars, a rear quarter-panel badge and elongated rear lights incorporating reversing lights. The interior, meanwhile, was entirely new, featuring bespoke upholstery and instrumentation. Mechanically, increasing the stroke and bore of the 1750 engine brought the displacement up to 1962 cm³, which, combined with two twin-barrel Solex or Dell’Orto carburettors, delivers 132 chevaux. Offering more torque, smooth performance at low revs and remaining very responsive and throaty at higher revs, this engine makes the 2000 the most versatile version. It is nonetheless still a sporty car, thanks in particular to its standard limited-slip differential and its weight, which remains well under a tonne. It also features disc brakes, and its beautiful 14-inch Campagnolo alloy wheels lend it a touch of Latin charm. As the most accomplished version and the final evolution of the famous ‘Bertone coupé’, the 2000 GTV is ultimately the perfect embodiment of the Italian car and a sure bet from Alfa Romeo. Our Alfa Romeo Bertone coupé is a 2000 GT Veloce first registered on 20 October 1975. It was delivered to its first owner by the Alfa Romeo dealership in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, as evidenced by the importer’s plate still present in the engine compartment. In keeping with this provenance, it has also retained some of its original yellow headlamps. It features an elegant and understated colour scheme, clearly original, with a Grigio Chiario Metallizzato exterior paired with a black imitation leather interior and matching carpet. The history of this car is remarkable, as it has had only three owners since 1980 – that is, over the last 46 years – as evidenced by the documents in its service history file. Although it had previously been repainted, this 2000 GTV coupé had never been fully restored; it provided a sound basis for reliability work when its current owner acquired it in 2022. In 2022, the owner commissioned a major mechanical overhaul, including the refurbishment of the engine and brakes, carried out by the classic car specialist JP Auto Passion, based in the Paris region. In 2024, he also had the previously fitted electronic ignition system replaced. With just over 12,000 km on the clock today, this Giulia 2000 GTV coupé is therefore in good working order. Aesthetically, the bodywork is not without a few imperfections and the fit of the doors could be improved for the best possible appearance, but the original interior, apart from a tear in the driver’s seat, is actually very well preserved. As a result, this 2000 GTV has developed a pleasant patina, giving it an undeniable charm that suits a classic car well. We are therefore offering you a prime example of an iconic Alfa Romeo model, acclaimed for its character that is both engaging and user-friendly, in its top-of-the-range version – the most enjoyable one. So let yourself be charmed by this beautiful Italian car, which will give you all the pleasure of the ‘Cuore Sportivo’.
