Originally launched in 1949, the Piaggio Ape Calessino is the passenger version of the famous APE utility three-wheeler, which had appeared the previous year and was fitted with a loading bed. Inspired by the Vespa, it quickly established itself as a symbol of la Dolce Vita, criss-crossing the narrow streets of Italian towns and seaside resorts thanks to its compact size, practicality and timeless charm.
In 2007, Piaggio relaunched the Calessino as a limited edition of just 999 units, produced in collaboration with the Italian engine manufacturer Lombardini. Powered by a 422 cm³ single-cylinder diesel engine producing 7.5 ch, coupled with a 4-speed manual gearbox, this three-wheeler offers a unique driving experience, ideal for open-air rides.
The model on display is number 85 out of 999 in this special series. It has clocked up just under 100 km to date, which explains why it is in near-new condition.
Its appearance, characteristic of the series to which it belongs, is particularly elegant, with its blue bodywork paired with white imitation leather upholstery, and white waterproof canvas doors and soft top. The polished stainless-steel fittings, the teak flooring and trim inspired by the famous Riva motorboats, and the white-walled tyres all emphasise the refined character of this limited edition.
