Model history
The Ducati 900 Super Sport belongs to one of the most iconic line-ups in the Bologna-based manufacturer’s sporting history.
Developed from Ducati’s large twin-cylinder models of the 1970s, it features the architecture of the famous 90° air-cooled L-twin engine, designed around a camshaft-driven valve train with bevel gears. The Super Sport version is further distinguished by the use of desmodromic valve timing, in which both the opening and closing of the valves are controlled mechanically.
Depending on the version and market, the 900 Super Sports from this period are generally rated at around 70 to 80 ch. The exact power output of this particular example has not been verified by the auction house.
The 900 SS also gained a strong sporting reputation when Mike Hailwood won the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy in 1978, on his return to competition, riding a modified Ducati 900 derived from this engine family. This event contributed significantly to the prestige of the Ducati Super Sport models with bevel gears.
In the late 1970s, the model’s design evolved. The 1979–1980 versions notably adopted a black livery with gold stripes and alloy wheels, giving the 900 SS the particularly distinctive look seen on this example.

Cultural reference
The Ducati 900 SS is also well known to the wider motorcycling public thanks to the comic strip *Joe Bar Team*: the character Guido Brasletti, known as ‘Pépé’, rides a Ducati 900 SS in the adventures of the famous gang of motorcyclists created by Bar2.
This reference has played a major part in making the 900 SS a true icon of French motorcycling culture from the 1970s to the 1990s.
