Description
DKW Munga 4, Auto Union, 4x4, 1958, 3-cylinder 2-stroke, 900 cm³. Serial number: 30506984. Odometer reading 39,101 km (unverified; 5-digit odometer). 40 CH. The engine starts up fine and makes no unusual noises. Always stored under cover, the vehicle is now ‘as-built’. The car is in need of restoration: surface corrosion in several places, front and rear running gear to be overhauled, clutch to be checked, cracked windscreen, etc. On the plus side: it started recently following a thorough cleaning of the carburettor and draining of the fuel tank (invoice included in the file). It is complete and provides a decent basis for a restoration.
An amusing detail: the vehicle still has its original labels with instructions in German inside the bonnet. According to the person looking after the vehicle, it was apparently intended for export and delivered to Algeria, before being used by the French fire service (as evidenced by some traces of red paint beneath the current beige paintwork) and then acquired in 1984 by the current owner.
We invite you to come and view the vehicle to see for yourself and/or to consult the expert’s report. Please note that the registration document states 1960, whilst the manufacturer’s plate states 1958. We will take 1958 as the year of manufacture for this vehicle.
Expert valuation available on request. Standard vehicle registration document. The roadworthiness certificate is invalid. Sold as seen. Viewing on 16 October near Angoulême. Please arrange for a flatbed lorry.
History: Auto Union was a German car manufacturer founded in 1932 following the merger of four manufacturers: Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer. This merger gave rise to the famous four-ring logo, which still represents the Audi brand today. The name MUNGA is the German abbreviation for ‘Mehrzweck-UniversalGeländewagen mit Allradantrieb’, which can be translated as ‘multi-purpose universal off-road vehicle with four-wheel drive’. Several versions were produced: the Munga 4, the Munga 6 and the Munga 8, the designations corresponding in particular to the number of seats and the length of the bodywork. Between 1956 and 1968, approximately 46,750 units were manufactured, a large proportion of which were supplied to the German armed forces.
