Lot no. 19
Description
A violet wood veneered chest of drawers, opening to 4 drawers on 3 rows, richly decorated with chased bronzes and espagnolette. Royal brown and red breche marble top stamped Pierre MIGEON (1701-1758). Damage and missing parts. H 89 x W 130 x D 68 cm. Awarded the title of Master around 1725 (the registers dating from the beginning of the reign of Louis XV have not been preserved), he was one of the greatest cabinet-makers of the 18th century. He supplied his furniture to a rich aristocratic clientele that included the Duke of Orléans, son of the Regent, the Duchess of Rohan, the Marshal of Noailles, the Duchess of Epernon, the Cardinal of Rohan, several bishops and ambassadors from foreign nations. From the 1740s, he received commissions from the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne and the Menus-Plaisirs. He benefited from the protection of the Marquise de Pompadour, whose prodigality towards him is recalled by d'Argenson in his memoirs.
He made furniture in rosewood and amaranth veneers. Migeon's furniture is characterised by what might be called robust elegance and a pronounced taste for curves, as on our chest of drawers above, which is representative of his work. His son, a Master in 1761, continued his father's workshop (Source: Le mobilier français du XVIIIe siècle, Kjellberg).
