Description
BRUSSELS, After a cartoon attributed to Bernard Van ORLEY "The stag flushed out Tapestry woven in wool and silk. Borders decorated with birds perched in foliage, probably brought back. Second half of the 17th century. (Restorations, shrinkage and reweaving; currently folded in height) 3.20 x 4.50 m (currently 2.80 m high) This tapestry is a remake of the 16th century tapestry known as "Maximilian's Hunts", more precisely, "The Allegory of August - The Stag Hunt", the model for which is traditionally attributed to Bernard Van Orley. Given its success, several later versions were rewoven, including the one we are presenting here. Two other tapestries, very similar to ours, are listed. The first was kept at the Musée du Louvre (OAR 58 a; D 969 6) and then placed on deposit at the Musée de Brou, while the second is currently at Upton House in England and forms part of the National Trust Collections (NT 446875). Both were woven in Brussels between 1650 and 1680. They bear the monogram or signature of Everard III Leyniers (1597-c. 1680) in the braid at the bottom of the border, which is not the case for ours.
