Hallmarks "BY" and "D", and large guarantee hallmark 1798-1809.
A.B.E.
Consulate period, modified during its passage in the mounted gendarmerie under the Empire.
Infantry sabre of honour reassembled for use as a cavalry sabre, given the recipient's record of service.
The original chape has been shortened to fit the scabbard, blocking it by the first piton; the chape button has been removed; the strap is later.
Note the heavy wear on two iron pins, evidence of intense service.
MONTLAURENT Thomas, (27 January 1773 - 9 January 1832, Reims-Marne), Sergeant in the 25th demi-brigade of light infantry, distinguished himself in the Army of Italy in 1800, and gave great proof of his valour throughout the blockade of Genoa. The First Consul awarded him a sabre of honour on 10 Prairial, Year XI. In 1803, he joined the 14th gendarmerie legion. He was still a mounted constable in the Marne company in 1819.
Nota :
This weapon is particularly interesting. Given by the First Consul to an infantry non-commissioned officer, he had it modified when he was transferred to the mounted gendarmerie in view of his attachment (quite rightly) to his sabre of honour.
Expert: Mr Jean-Claude DEY.
