17th-century Alsatian School. Triptych of the Cordiers brotherhood. Panels.
In 1684, Louis XIV's troops entered Strasbourg, imposing the Catholic religion on a city that had remained safe from the Thirty Years' War in the bosom of the Holy Roman Empire. The brotherhood of tailors, known as "la Mauresse", was the seventh largest in the city. Its official emblem, consisting of a ball, a rake, a crank and an arrow, can be seen on this tryptic. This brotherhood brings together string makers, hemp makers, fripiers, fruit makers, second-hand goods dealers, candle makers, carters, salt merchants, coltineurs, poulterers, savourers, unloaders and tobacco workers.
Our painting is organised in several registers. Two outer panels show two figures, Antoni Schrag and Conrad Wanner, probably masters of the guild of tailors or cordeliers, with the date 1587. Inside, forty-eight coats of arms or shields stand out against backgrounds of various colours, some bearing the date 1633. These coats of arms sometimes combine tools and emblems associated with the tailor's trade (crank, hook, rake, arrow, reel and seran), and sometimes holy or allegorical figures. Identifiable figures include Saint Barbara, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Saint Christopher, Saint Nicholas, Saint Sebastian and an allegory of Justice. Several inscriptions, frequently from Strasbourg, but also from other places such as St Gallen and Bingen. Some inscriptions seem to refer to functions within the guild, such as Schreiber (scribe or clerk), Ladenmeister (in charge of the guild chest), Ladengesell (journeyman attached to the Lade, i.e. the guild institution) or Obermeister (senior master). Inside, we find two tailpieces with the date 1684 and inscriptions in phylacteries ?Jacob? grob? Scardt Laden / Gefel (?)Ano 1684 and Christian Jacob Von Sittow / Laden Gefel (?) Ano 1684. In the centre are 42 shields with inscriptions, the various emblems of the ropemakers' guild, figures of Catholic saints and partially erased inscriptions in which the name Strasbourg frequently appears. Sculptures with cherubs and grinning heads have been added at the top and bottom.
