The Birth of Saint John the Baptist
Pen and brown ink, brown wash, partially incised.
Verso: Hand studies in black stone and sketch, numbered 166 in pen and brown ink.
Height: 26 cm Width: 46 cm.
(Vertical tear in the centre previously restored, folds, freckles, stains).
On the frame, label: "Giovanni Battista della Rovere... former collection of Mes Hamish Robertson".
Provenance: private collection, Rouen.
The Birth of St. John the Baptist in pen and ink, by Della Rovere.
To be compared with the Birth of the Virgin in the British Museum (see G.Bora, I disegni lombardi e genovesi del cinquecento,ed. Libreria Editrice Canova, Treviso, 1980, no. 85, repr.). In 1585, Della Rovere decorated a wall in the chapel of his patron saint in the Duomo of Monza with remarkable scenes from his life.
