Robiquet. Scene in a palm grove. Canvas. Marie-Aimée Lucas-Robiquet was one of those women who had to struggle to make their mark on the French art scene. As she was forbidden to attend the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, she entered the studio of the painter Félix Barrias, whose taste for orientalism she adopted. After marrying Maurice-Edouard-Louis-Henri Lucas, a French soldier based in Algeria, she moved to Constantine, where she devoted herself entirely to painting. Her Orientalist works feature vibrant colours and an underlying impressionist touch. Our painting is a brilliant tribute to the work and life of women in Algeria, beyond simply depicting everyday life in these villages at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The theme is reminiscent of a work by the artist entitled "Date picking in a garden in Négrine", shown at the Toulouse Union Artistique Exhibition in 1898. The works she presented in France were praised by the critics, starting with Louis Gonse and the painter Luc-Olivier Merson, who had nothing but praise for her work. B.L. and N.C.
