Description
Jean Dufy (French, 1888-1964) The Circus, 1960 Gouache. Signed and dated, dedicated "to Jean-Jacques". Height 14.5 Width 20 cm. Framed. 41.5 x 47.5 cm. Provenance: given by the artist to a young admirer from Tours; private collection, Tours. Jean Dufy. The Circus. Signed gouache, dated 1960. The Roaring Twenties were a period of intense creativity for Dufy, who created the set for the comedy Le boeuf sur le toit and immortalised the Fratellini brothers in a dazzling series of paintings on the theme of the Circus in 1927. Attached to his wife's native southern Touraine, Dufy moved to La Boissière, in Boussay, in 1948. He then embarked on a series of expeditions across Europe, revisiting his favourite themes. A series of gouaches of mature virtuosity illuminate the 1960s. This fresh, never-before-published drawing of a clown orchestra on a starry dance floor was given to the son of the Dufys' Touraine friends, and has remained in the family ever since.
