A painter, theatre decorator and illustrator, Ivan Bilibin trained as a draughtsman with Répine before travelling throughout the Russian Empire to illustrate numerous oral tales from Slavic foklore. He also illustrated oriental tales, which were brought to light by the composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in his masterpiece Scheherazade. After the 1917 Revolution, Bilibine emigrated to Paris, where he produced illustrations for a number of books, including Marguerite Reynier's Le Tapis volant (The Flying Carpet) in 1935. He then adapted the adventures of The Thousand and One Nights and reworked these compositions, which were also published by Nathan.
