Ivan Yakovlevich Balibin (Russian, 1876-1942) The Thousand and One Nights, 1931-1932 Four lithographs published by Fernand Nathan. 1, The Flying Carpet, 1931 2, Sinbad the Sailor, 1932 3, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, 1932 4, Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, 1932 Height 36 Width 94 cm. Nice condition, slight folds in the margins. Black baguette frames. Provenance: private collection, Tours. Bilibin. Four lithograph prints of The Arabian Nights, published by Nathan in 1931-1932. A painter, theatre decorator and illustrator, Ivan Bilibin trained as a draughtsman with Répine before travelling throughout the Russian Empire to illustrate numerous oral tales from Slavic foklore. He also illustrated oriental tales, which were brought to light by the composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in his masterpiece Scheherazade. After the 1917 Revolution, Bilibine emigrated to Paris, where he produced illustrations for a number of books, including Marguerite Reynier's Le Tapis volant (The Flying Carpet) in 1935. He then adapted the adventures of The Thousand and One Nights and reworked these compositions, which were also published by Nathan.
