Frank-Will (French, 1900-1951) Saint-Pierre des Marins in the port of Fécamp, c. 1922 Canvas. Signed lower right. Height 150 Width 170 cm. Restoration. Black stained wood frame. 170 x 189 cm. Provenance: private collection, Neuilly-sur-Seine. Frank Will. Saint-Pierre-des-Marins ceremony in the port of Fécamp. Canvas, circa 1922. This large canvas is the act of emancipation of a young artist, barely 22, Frank William Boggs, who had just taken the name Frank Will to distinguish himself from his father, who was also a painter. That year, 1922, he travelled around Normandy and set up his easel in the port of Fécamp, where on the first Sunday in February Saint Peter's Day, also known as "Le Grand Pardon des Terre-Neuvas", was celebrated. For the occasion, the three-masted Newfoundlanders, who set out to sea for long months of cod fishing, all fly their flags. They lay proudly in the basin where steam trawlers were beginning to replace them. The day before, the captains' conference was held at the shipowners' union. That same morning, the colours were hoisted in front of the town hall and the Lyre Maritime brass band led the parade through the town. The picture was painted during mass at Saint-Etienne church, which forms the focal point of the composition. Mass was held for sailors who had died at sea, and a collection was organised for their families. Soon the bells will ring, the procession will reach the quays and the pilot boat will take the bishop to bless each of the Terres-Neuves and their crews. Monumental in size and perfectly restored, this painting is the act of bravery of a young painter who pays tribute in his own way to the bravery of young sailors ploughing through the sea and the waves.
