After Jean Jacques Flatters (French, 1786-1845) Bust of Major General Claparède wearing the insignia of the Legion of Honour and the Order of Saint Louis Patinated bronze, marked on the pedestal on the right "FLATTERS 1827", on the front "LE COMTE MICHEL CLAPAREDE LIEUTENANT GENERAL PAIR DE FRANCE" and on the left "FONDU PAR Fs CHARNOD ET SON FILS 1857. A MONTROUGE PRES PARIS". Height 82 Width 60 cm. A mahogany veneered display case with marble top. Bronze bust of General Claparède by Flatters in 1827 and cast in 1857, preserved in the family. Related work: the original plaster cast exhibited at the 1827 Salon, then at the Strasbourg Town Hall in 1842; a plaster antique bust of the General, signed and dated "Flatters fait a vivo en 1817", sold on 9 December 2018 in Fontainebleau, Me Osenat, no. 274. Born on 28 August 1770 in Gignac, Michel Marie Claparède (1770-1842) was elected captain of the Hérault volunteers in 1793. He took part in the repression in the west. In November 1798, he served in the Italian army, commanding the towns of Milan, Piacenza and Genoa. Moreau made him a battalion commander and took him to the army of the Rhine, where he was in charge of intelligence. He took part in the Saint-Domingue expedition with Leclerc, returning in 1804 with the rank of brigadier general. He left again in 1805 to conquer Dominica. He then served in the Grande Armée, notably at Austerlitz, where he defended the Santon position, and at Jena the following year. He was created a Count of the Empire and appointed Major General in 1808. Governor of Valladolid in Spain, he joined the Grande Armée on the Danube. He was wounded at Ebersberg, where he fought a heroic battle. In 1810 he was sent back to Spain, only to leave again in 1812 for Russia, where he took part in all the battles, including the Berezina, where he was again wounded. Taken prisoner at the capitulation of Dresden in November 1813, he did not take part in the Hundred Days. He became Inspector General of the Infantry under Louis XVIII and Peer of France in 1819. He died in Montpellier on 23 October 1842.
