Taunay. Oil sketch on canvas of the Battle of Ebersberg, preserved in the family of General Claparède. 1809.
The Battle of Ebersberg, on 3 May 1809, pitted Marshal Masséna against General Hiller's Austrian rearguard. The Claparède division, at the heart of an encircling manoeuvre, found itself isolated in the face of vastly superior enemy forces. After suffering heavy losses, it resisted and finally stormed the castle and town of Ebelsberg, which fell to the French, opening the way to Vienna. Commissioned from Taunay on 8 July 1809, before being exhibited at the Salon of 1810, the final painting of the Battle of Ebersberg was installed at the Grand Trianon in the Emperor's large study in 1811. Since 1834, it has been in the historical galleries and then in the Midi wing of the Château de Versailles (MV1562).
