Description
General Claparède's Glaive de Dignitaire ou de Pair de France. Fuse with two plain mother-of-pearl plates, decorated on the front with a vermeil motif of foliate palmettes and sphinxes. The sides of the spindle decorated with a gilt brass interlace plate (one missing). Chased and gilt brass mounting. Helmet pommel with empanached grid. Cross with two quillons decorated with foliage ending with a profile of a man with a goat's horn and a profile of a deity. Body knot with the face of a deity in a palm wreath. Blade with central flattened edge engraved, gilded and blued in thirds, signed on the heel "K&S à Solingen". Scabbard covered in white shagreen (wear) with gilt brass cap decorated with amati, friezes of foliage and spider's web. Bouterole decorated in suite and water leaves. Symmetrical rounded dart. With gilt silver thread divisional general's lanyard, fishnet cord, tassel decorated with three silver spangled stars on two sides with large fringes. Restoration period. Length 93.4 cm. One pin repaired by soldering, the other cracked. Provenance: direct descendants of Count Michel Claparède (1770-1842), French general during the Revolution and the Empire, Count of the Empire in 1808 and Peer of France in 1819; private collection, Charente. Dignitary sword of General Claparède, Bourbon Restoration period. Bluish blade, mother-of-pearl and brass grip, shagreen scabbard.
