Portrait of General Mouton-Duvernet in the uniform of a Major General, wearing the orders of the Legion of Honour and the Iron Crown
Round miniature on ivory.
Diameter: 55 mm.
On a round snuffbox in elm burr veneer lined with tortoiseshell.
Height: 27 Diameter: 84.4 mm.

Related work: this miniature was reproduced in engravings by Forestier and Giraud. The paintings depicting the general were executed after the Empire and, unlike our representation, are clearly identifiable by the insignia of Commander of the Legion of Honour worn in saltire.
Régis Barthélemy, Baron Mouton-Duvernet (1769-1816) served in Spain (1808-1812), Germany (1809) and was taken prisoner at Dresden (1813). A supporter of Napoleon during the Hundred Days, after Waterloo he proposed the recognition of the King of Rome and opposed the return of the Bourbons. Proscribed during the Second Restoration, he was taken prisoner and shot.
