Carpeaux. Asia or Chinese man no.2. Terracotta.
About thirty centimetres high, this bust of a Chinese man is an offshoot of a monumental work by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux: the "Fontaine des Quatre-Parties-du-Monde". Commissioned in 1867 by Baron Haussmann to be placed opposite the Observatory, it features the personifications of America, Africa, Europe and Asia supporting the celestial sphere.
This bust is the result of Carpeaux's research into the representation of the face of Asia.
It was produced in three different models: "l'Esquisse" with its impressionist treatment, Chinois n°1 in large dimensions and Chinois n°2 in small dimensions. Terracotta, bronze, plaster and marble are used. Not mentioned in the catalogue raisonné, the terracotta proof of "Chinois n°2" is rare. It would have been published during the artist's lifetime with date stamps, then posthumously in his studio in Auteuil by his family, as was this proof.
