Under the Second Empire, Empress Eugénie became enamoured of the "Marie-Antoinette style" and redesigned the interior décor of the Château de Saint-Cloud. In keeping with the historicist taste, the cabinetmakers reused the forms of the late 18th century. Caryatid legs and H-shaped pedestals, inspired by the work of Adam Weisweiler, were used extensively to evoke the Queen's writing table (Musée du Louvre, Paris, OA5509), as was the pedestal on this piece of furniture.
The model for our table was invented by Guillaume Winckelsen. On his death in 1871, Henry Dasson acquired his stock and deliberately adopted this model, of which we have referenced at least five examples signed and dated between 1878 and 1888, with variations in the composition of the crotch (Christie's sales 2007, 2012, 2016 and 2018, Adrian Alan and Ledoux-Lebard gallery, op. cit).
"Les modèles pour bronzes d'art, meubles de style et grande décoration et droit de reproduction de la Maison H.Dasson et Cie" were then the subject of four sales in 1894 on the death of Henry Dasson. A "Louis XVI table with a woman's head and a small faun" recalls the composition of our pedestal table. The model was bought for "210 francs" by "Sormani", according to the handwritten information in the catalogue held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Department of Prints and Photography, YD-1).
The firm of Veuve Paul Sormani et fils, which was active until 1934, subsequently reissued this model in several types of wood, in order to extend its "chic", as noted by an anonymous commentator in the Dasson et Cie sale catalogue.
