In eighteenth-century Venice, the French art of living was in vogue. Numerous craftsmen worked together to decorate the bodoar, derived from the French boudoir. The "depentore" played a fundamental role: his work was an imitation of Chinese and Japanese lacquer. The technique was described by Morazzoni in 1958, from the preparatory stages and the creation of decorations using brushes or pens to gilding with mordant. Lacquer then conquered all media, adorning them with characters "à la chinoise", as well as creating lacquered sculptures on the same themes. Even though painters were gradually freeing themselves from Asian models, Oriental decorations remained in vogue with the "lacca povera" technique, achieved by applying coloured prints covered in sandarac to give the illusion of painting. This innovation meets a growing demand for lacquered objects with chinoiserie decoration. Our pair of Chinese subjects, reminiscent of bookends, illustrate the Serenissima's infatuation with the Middle Kingdom.
