Description
Antoine Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875) Elephant of Senegal, the model created around 1874 Bronze with brown and green patina. Signed on the terrace, with gold stamp "FB" (1876-1890) and mark on the reverse "Barbedienne Fondeur". Marked on the reverse "9". Height 13.5 Length 19.3 Depth 7 cm. Minor wear to the patina. Provenance: private collection, Vendôme. Barye. Elephant of Senegal, model created circa 1874. Bronze cast by Barbedienne between 1876 and 1889. Bibliography: Michel Poletti, Alain Richarme, "Barye catalogue raisonné", Paris, Gallimard, 2000, p. 251, n°A119. This small elephant illustrates Barye's stylistic evolution at the turn of the 1870s. The sculptor abandoned static compositions in favour of a more dynamic representation, in which the animal appears to float. And for good reason, the pachyderm rests only on its left hind leg. This model, conceived as a counterpart to the Cochinchina elephant, reappeared at the Barye sale in 1876, where three examples were found. Our example, cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne between 1876 and 1889, according to its stamp and reverse, bears witness to the model's posthumous success. Indeed, almost 10 new editions of the Senegalese elephant were cast up until the first third of the 20th century. Having become a benchmark for the new generation, it was reinterpreted by animal sculptors such as Vendôme-born Roger Godchaux with his "running elephant" fifty years later.
