He joined John Flaxman's studio as an assistant in 1807, and was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1809. On the strength of his academic training, Baily became one of the leading exponents of English neoclassicism. The marble offered to the Royal Academy as a "reception piece" (now in the Bristol City Art Gallery) brought the sculptor European renown when it was presented at the Universal Exhibitions of 1853 and 1862.
