IRAN – Ghoum, 20th century Large silk Ghoum, Shah era, c. 1965 Silk pile carpet on a silk backing. Silk pile, warp, weft and fringes. Garden motif, featuring rows of square medallions inlaid with oil lamps, vases with bouquets of flowers, trees of life in full bloom surrounded by stylised animals and birds, prayer niches, and an original polychrome floral composition. A beautiful, very well-balanced design resembling a mosaic and stylised tiling. Seven borders, the main one being ivory in colour and decorated with a scattering of finely drawn old-gold floral bulbs, circles of floral wreaths and stylised foliage.
