20th-century Moroccan school Figure against a backdrop of an oriental city Gouache on paper 50 x 28.5 cm (Folded in the middle) Provenance: Private collection of Monique de Gouvenain (1916–2007), who worked at the reception centre for North African students in Paris during the 1960s. It was there that she met several young student artists, including Ahmed Cherkaoui. Towards the end of 1965, after collaborating with the Ballets Modernes de Paris and the Baux-de-Provence Dance Festival, Monique de Gouvenain finally realised her dream of opening a contemporary art gallery, the Galerie Solstice. Located on Rue des Tournelles, near Place des Vosges, in the Marais district – which was undergoing a major transformation at the time – the gallery staged a group exhibition to mark its opening, in which Ahmed Cherkaoui naturally took part. Thereafter, Monique de Gouvenain regularly exhibited his works, as well as those of Chaïbia, Tallal, Belkahia, and numerous other French and international painters and sculptors such as Ghesquière, Lonsdale, Scherdin and Yayanagi.
