ETHIOPIA, Addis Ababa, Choa (Shewa) Region, 19th century Processional cross — qäqwami mäsqäl Cut, openwork and engraved brass, mounted on a conical socket designed to hold a shaft. Shows signs of wear and age. H.: 51 cm. This cross was held aloft by a deacon during processions and major liturgical ceremonies. It symbolises the Resurrection of Christ and the spiritual authority of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
