Description

PERU, Nazca (200–600 AD) Vase depicting a feline deity, a bird and a mouse. Polychrome terracotta. Nazca, Peru, 200–600 AD. H. 11 cm. W. 15.5 cm. (Broken and repaired; the crack features two old perforations and signs of age). The feline deity, armed with a sacrificial knife and depicted alongside a trophy head, emphasises the warlike and ceremonial nature of the representation. The dense frieze of mice—a recurring motif in Nazca art associated with the agricultural world and food stores—contrastingly highlights the feline’s predatory power. The two perforations on either side of the crack bear witness to a repair carried out in pre-Columbian times using ligatures that have since disappeared, and demonstrate the importance attached to this vase by its people.
