Description
HEMBA, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Hardwood, with a beautiful patina of age.
Commemorative statue of a ‘Singiti’ chief; the figure is depicted standing on a circular plinth, with his hands resting on either side of his abdomen. The sculptor conveys the figure’s nobility through the quality of the carving of the head; the face, with half-closed eyes, is adorned with a beard, and the whole exudes a sense of power and inner strength.
First half of the 20th century.
H. 49.5 cm.
