JAPAN. Red and gold lacquered wood. Two magnificent votive sculptures depicting ‘Tsuru’ cranes standing on the backs of tortoises. In Japanese tradition, the crane (Tsuru) is a symbol of longevity, happiness and fidelity, whilst the tortoise (Kame) represents longevity, wisdom and protection.
