‘Lipiko’ helmet mask, depicting a female portrait with a rounded face enhanced with natural red-ochre pigments. The slightly parted mouth reveals pointed teeth; the upper lip is adorned with a labret, a characteristic feature of Makonde female representations.
Lipiko helmet masks, carved from light wood, are associated with mapiko dances and initiation ceremonies amongst the Makonde. Worn by dancers, they can represent various characters from society, notably male and female figures. The depiction of the labret refers to a practice once widespread amongst Makonde women.
