MARQUISAS ISLANDS, Polynesia. Three ‘kea tuki’ pestles made of volcanic basalt, in a fragmented condition. They were used to prepare popoï (a kind of fermented paste made from uru, the fruit of the breadfruit tree). 19th century. H. 8.5 cm – 10 cm and 12 × 15.5 cm. Original label ‘Taaoa Valley’. Provenance: Private collection in Sologne (by inheritance). Literature: Catalogue of the Musée de l’Homme on Polynesian pestles by José Garanger, 1967.
