IATMUL, Papua New Guinea.
Plastered wood, pig’s tusk, nassa and conus shells, cassowary feathers.
A ‘Mwai’ mask symbolising a protective ancestor and worn during dances, attached to a cone-shaped costume woven like a basket, with a fringe of fibres. This mask was used during initiation ceremonies to summon helpful spirits.
