ABELAM, Maprik district, Papua New Guinea. Polychrome wickerwork, wild boar tusks, nassa shells. ‘Karahut’ mouth ornament evoking a raging wild boar, a symbol of warrior valour. It was worn by a young boy on the final day of his initiation and carried on the back by a warrior during warfare. H. 37 cm. Provenance: Private collection in Sologne (by inheritance).
