Description
ABELAM, Maprik District, Papua New Guinea. Hardwood, polychrome natural pigments. A ‘wapinyan’ sculpture, literally meaning ‘children of the yams’ (waapi: yams and nyan: son or daughter). This sculpture was used during initiation ceremonies and depicts a male figure with a beard, his arms pressed against his sides and his knees drawn inwards. H. 64 cm. (small parts missing, due to age). Provenance: Private collection in Sologne (by inheritance).
