YORUBA, Igbomina region, Nigeria. Wood, reddish-brown patina, traces of powder. Male figure, ‘ere Ibeji’, used in the worship of twins. The figure is depicted naked, standing on a circular base, with arms outstretched from the body and hands resting on the hips. The face is characterised by notches on the cheeks, a triangular mouth and bulging eyes. First half of the 20th century. Height: 28 cm. Cracks. Provenance: Former collection of Galerie Lecomte, Paris. Note: The high rate of twin births in Yoruba country led to the establishment of the ‘ere ibeji’ cult of twins. Indeed, before this cult emerged, twins were considered to be evil and were sacrificed.
