Description
BABANKI TUNGO, North-West Cameroon. Wood, reddish-brown patina. This caryatid chair is characteristic of the art of the Kedjom kingdoms, in particular Kedjom Ketinguh, better known as Babanki Tungo. The Kedjom style was popularised thanks to the efforts of a king-sculptor (Phonchu Aséh) and subsequently by his son Aséh II, who reigned from 1919 to 1960. This stool, probably from the royal workshop, is enhanced by the presence of two leopards, whose characteristics are attributed to the king (‘Fo’o’), namely cunning, speed and strength.
