A very old ‘Agbogho Mmuo’ or ‘Maiden Spirit’ mask, evoking the spirit of a young girl whose physical features, scarification and intricate hairstyle are all characteristic elements of the ideal feminine beauty amongst the Igbo people.
This mask is worn by men, who imitate the movements of a graceful woman to music played on traditional drums and other instruments.
First third of the 20th century.
