Description
FANG, Gabon. Hardwood, patina from wear and tear. Blacksmith’s bellows fitted with two hollowed-out air chambers, the bellows receptacles. Late 19th–early 20th century. 54 × 33 cm. (traces of wood-boring insects). Provenance: Part of a collection of objects gathered in situ at the very beginning of the 20th century by the colonial engineer and adviser, Laurent Schlüssel (according to family tradition). Note: The label gives the exhibitor’s name as L. Schussel. The Ministry of the Colonies’ archives on colonial personnel confirm the presence of Laurent Ernest Schlüssel as a colonial engineer. Head of department in 1885.
