NDUMU/ONDOUMBO, Haut Ogooué, Gabon. Woven shield with leather flaps; on the reverse, a rectangular wooden plate and the handle. Late 19th–early 20th century. 126.5 x 42.5 cm. (minor damage and losses). Note: See a very similar example of the same age in the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac (No. 71.1884.37.60). Provenance: Part of a collection of objects gathered in situ at the very beginning of the 20th century by the colonial engineer and consultant, Laurent Schlüssel (according to family tradition). Note: The label gives the exhibitor’s name as L. Schussel. The Ministry of the Colonies’ archives on colonial personnel confirm the presence of Laurent Ernest Schlüssel as a colonial engineer. He was head of department in 1885.
