MAKONDE, Tanzania/Mozambique. Hardwood, black patina, traces of human hair. ‘Lipiko’ helmet mask depicting the face of a middle-aged man characterised by pronounced baldness. 25x25x19 cm. (Minor chips and restoration). Provenance: Former Edmond Remondino collection, Fribourg. Note: The men, who keep this a secret, perform as the ‘mapiko’ (plural) during long night-time performances. They symbolically construct the gender boundary between men and women, and express the moral and political concerns of society.
