GUERZE, Republic of Guinea. Hardwood, red pigments, patina from wear, vegetable gum. ‘Nyomou kpman hinè’ mask for social control depicting a human face surmounted by two ram’s horns, with tubular eyes and a full-lipped mouth. This type of mask, greatly feared by villagers, was originally reserved for the warrior caste. First half of the 20th century. 26 x 21.5 cm. (cracks and slight erosion). Provenance: -A.G.
