Description
LEGA, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Wood, pigments, plant fibres.
‘Idumu’ mask with a heart-shaped face and a long beard made of plaited fibre. It evokes the image of the highest-ranking member of the Bwami society and is used during the Kindi and Yananio initiations, where it appears in the mukumbi rite and replaces the smaller Lukwakongo mask. Circa 1950–60.
