Description
YOROUBA, Nigeria. Wood, dark brown patina, beads, beautiful and aged patina from use, glossy highlights. An exceptional equestrian figure depicting a horseman riding his harnessed mount, sitting upright in the saddle, his left hand symbolically guiding the animal whilst his right hand holds a weapon. The expressive power of this depiction is conveyed through the rider’s solemn posture, the richness of detail, the harmony between man and beast, and the remarkable patina that only time and use can bestow. This work showcases the talent of an unknown sculptor who, thanks to his artistic skill and the precision of his craftsmanship, would be worthy of the title ‘Aerõgun-yanna’, meaning ‘he who obtains money with the tools of Ogun and spends it generously’.
